about

Rubha Da Chuain is a tiny headland close to Morar but the name suggests something much bigger. For me it reflects the pivotal point we’ve reached as a species and the need to decide a clear path to secure the survival of our planet. The sailor/ seoltóir is a play on the Irish term for the mighty yet graceful basking shark, navigating its way instinctively through ocean currents in our waters but also the idea that we all have individual responsibility to plot our course just as wisely.

Through working with NatureScot I have come to understand more about how sharks use the oceans and how our relationship with the species has changed. Using satellite tags, attached to basking sharks, scientists from NatureScot have been able to learn about their patterns of migration and use of ocean currents, how long they spend at the surface in summer months, the depths to which they dive, their consistent presence feeding in the waters around the Hebrides over the summer and where else they visit travelling south for winter.
